As I slowly (but hopefully, surely!) work towards building a website for my tiny, 1-person business, I thought it might help to document and share my thoughts along the way!

A company website often acts as a window into a business’ soul.

A business website tells you, or at least should tell you everything you need to know about an organization before approaching them for further information.

However, websites sometimes aren’t very compelling, and that’s probably because they’re trying to share information from their point of view, instead of focusing on the benefits that their business can provide for their customers.

Developing strong, client-focused website content can be a game changer! Below are some tips to keep in mind when looking to create remarkable web copy. (Stay tuned for the rest of the steps in part 2!)

🔍 Start with an audit

When revamping web copy, audit your existing website to ensure you provide everything a potential customer might need, to consider your business over others. That could mean your values, offerings, blog, testimonials etc.

If you’re looking to create fresh web copy, on the other hand, take time to assess your competitor websites — they can inspire you to uniquely present your content too!

🎯 Target the right personas

Understanding your customer personas before building your website is crucial! Knowing your customers’ modes of consuming information, preferences on content formats, age brackets etc. will help you understand what kind of copy you need to create.

It can ultimately help you create content that’s more educational/viral/real or whatever else your target personas may prefer to consume.

👑♟️Strategy is queen!

This is unarguably the most important step to creating any copy for your business, not just web copy. Having a strong content strategy will help guide the what, when and where of every piece of content you create.

In today’s digital landscape, your search engine rankings, your customers’ attention span and desire to stay on your website is all determined by QUALITY CONTENT! If you don’t strategize the goals of your content pieces, their impact will be lost on audiences who are constantly presented with large amounts of information.

🦄 Define your uniqueness

Your website can’t list a bunch of offerings with a vague vision or mission statement to entice target audiences. It’s important to spend time to craft content that reflects exactly how you provide better value for clients. This is your unique value proposition and it should be weaved throughout your website copy to ensure customers recall it even after leaving your website. It’s like placing your unique fingerprint on the competitive landscape.

In the meantime, let me know if any of these steps feel relevant as you work on your web copy (or any copy, really!). I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments! :)
